“Winter blues will soon be over…”

I’ve been trying — and failing — to resurrect my creative writing habit. In an effort to, well, make more of an effort, I’ve decided to begin posting my favorite piece from each Writing Circle or Free Write I attend. I’ll try my best to keep subsequent edits to a minimum!

Prompt: “Winter blues will soon be over, and spring will bring…”

The annual playlist rotation is nigh. “Headphones and hoodies,”
the sound of refrozen snow under Timberland boots
slowly fading.

The higher pitched scream of the train tracks in sub-zero temperatures,
the hum of interstate traffic on the George Washington bridge.

I could close my eyes and tell you the season.

The coldness of stares, the lack of excuse me’s,
the temporary relief of your winter birthday.

It’ll all soon be over, and spring will bring new faded hope,
new naivety of the permanence of warmth,
new resolutions, deferred from Winter, amended in Spring
and soon forgotten by June.

A few trees whose branches are covered in snow below a blue sky.
